Be Aware of Alaska Ferry Price Changes

Alaska Ferry Passage Costs Change Daily

Because the State of Alaska has implemented dynamic or staircase pricing, fares can change not only every day - but sometimes between the morning & evening of the same day.

This system is understandably extremely unpopular as it makes planning difficult for both the ferry traveller and any agent trying to assist in planning a trip.

With this in mind please note that the Alaska fares on this site are basic fares so are estimates only: changes, based on the availability of a particular voyage, can and as a sailing gets closer, often happen.

For the most up-to-date fares on any particular Alaska ferry sailing, please call 1-800-686-0446 or email us at info@ferrytravel.com.
Quoted Alaska ferry prices on this site are subject to daily changes due to availability.

With the exception of the Alaska Marine ferries, fares for all other ferry systems on this site (BC Ferries; Seattle ferries; Inter Island ferries) enjoy fixed pricing as shown, and are not subject to dynamic pricing.

Secure Ferry Booking

Checking The Security Level of A Site

If using any site into which you will be entering personal information, it is wise to look at the address bar to ensure that you are both where you intend to be, and that the site page is secure.

A quick easy check of any sites' security level is to check the padlock contents at the beginning of the address.
By clicking on the padlock, you are able to check the security level of the page.

Is the lock black and closed ? OR is the lock open with a red slash

A black padlock indicates that that page connection is secure.
A red slash through the padlock notes that that page connection is not secure

Kudos To BC Ferries

Mechanical Issues Forced BC Ferry Cancellations

A cylinder head issue forced BC Ferries to cancel 2 morning sailings from Vancouver to Nanaimo yesterday morning.

The Queen of New Westminster was quickly dispatched and she was able to meet the schedules for the balance of the day.  Kudos to BC Ferries !

As the replacement ferry was moved into position, some passengers chose to sail Departure Bay-Horseshoe Bay (the northern Nanaimo terminal), others drove south to Victoria and sailed Swartz Bay -Tsawwassen and the balance of travellers waited at Duke Point for the Queen of New Westminster.

FYI:
The BC Ferries summer/fall 2020 northern sailings for Prince Rupert, Port Hardy, Skigegate (Haida Qwaii) are now open for booking at www.ferrytravel.com.

Avoid Frustration Before Trying To Book A Ferry

The Banks Are Only Protecting You

Avoid the frustration that may result when you try to book a ferry only to keep having your credit card declined.

The most common reason for a decline is because you have not informed the bank that you are planning a trip and may be making charges that are often higher than you usual spending pattern.

A quick call to your credit card company or bank to advise them of upcoming travel will save both time and frustration.

www.ferrytravel.com carries an EV SSL Certificate which indicates it has the highest possible level of security.

Ferry Cancellations and Refunds

Typical Ferry Refund Wait times

Refunds and /or cancellations of a ferry passage typically take a minimum of 7 working days, and more often about 10 working days.

Banks and credit cards are always quick to charge but for whatever reason the refund process takes considerably longer.

A word of caution: Before calling your credit card /bank to complain about a perceived refund delay, first contact the company you made the booking with to find out how long the refund will take.
If a credit card investigation is started instead, all funds are frozen and the company you purchased the ticket from can not return your money until the investigation has completed.

Any investigation takes about 30 working days - so always try to resolve any refund issues prior to requesting an investigation.

Alaska Ferry Out Until March 2020

Alaskas' M/V Matanuska Ferry Sailings Cancelled

The ferry is expected to return to service on Monday March 2nd.

Alaska Ferry Out Until March 6, 2020

Seven Week Ferry Sailing Gap

Without ferry service for the last 3 weeks, Skagway continues to suffer as the Alaska ferry system struggles to keep its vessels in service after major budget cuts by the Dunleavy government.

Repairs to the M/V Matunuska, who last week suffered issues with the reduction-gear system & which will require drydock services in Ketchikan, has left Skagway with no scheduled ferry service until March 6.

The state has allowed those travelers on the Matunuska who are now stuck in Juneau as a result of the vessels' mechanical issues, to stay aboard at no cost.  Complimentary food will also be provided.

Alaska Cancels Sailing

Alaska Ferry Cancelled through to March 01

Sailings have again been cancelled by the Alaska Marine ferry system. Mechanical issue continue to plaque the MV Matanuska - this time, the issue is with the reduction gear system.

A drydock stay in the Ketchikan shipyard where the system can best be inspected is now scheduled.  It is hoped that the system, which is covered under warranty, can be repaired quickly so that the ferry can return to service at the start of March

Aware of the travel needs in March, Alaska Marine is exploring options for alternative service in the event the ship is unable to return to service as planned.

Before Booking A Ferry

The Banks (Credit Card Companies) Are Protecting You

Before booking a ferry it is a good idea to call your bank to advise that you are planning travel and will be making a ferry booking.

Ferry travel can be expensive & if the cost of the ticket is outside your normal spending pattern, your bank may decline your purchase & wait for you to call them to question the decline.
Although perhaps frustrating, it is important to remember that your bank is only protecting you.

Unexpected credit card declines can be avoided if you call your bank (credit card company) to advise them of your intended purchase prior to booking.
