Canada / US Border Information Update

US passport rule on hold, for Americans only

Senior homeland security officials in the US have announced they will temporarily suspend a rule requiring American air travellers to have a passport to re-enter the United States from Canada and Mexico.

The move is aimed at clearing a massive backlog in passport applications at the US state department.
Despite the temporary suspension, Canadian air travellers will still need passports to enter the US.
 
US & Canadian citizens crossing the border by land or sea do not require a passport until Jan 2008

Brentwood to Mill Bay Ferry Resumes service

 

VICTORIA, BC – BC Ferries:
Following regular drydock maintainence, schedued service between Mill Bay and Brentwood Bay will resume on Monday May 28, 2007.

This popular little passenger/vehicle ferry which crosses Saanich Inlet in approximately 25 minutes to transport travellers from Brentood Bay to Mill Bay, is the oldest continuous ferry operation on the coast of British Columbia.

MV NORTHERN ADVENTURE PREPARES FOR SUMMER

BC Ferries: VICTORIA –  BC Ferries has announced that in preparation for the busy summer season the MV Northern Adventure will go into Drydock from May 9 to 19.  

During this period the mid and north coast will be served by the MV Queen of Prince Rupert
In consideration of the heavy demand for travel on the Prince Rupert- Port Hardy route, reservations should be made as early a possible

Seattle to Friday Harbor Ferry Commences May 18/07

Passenger-only ferry service Seattle to Friday Harbor will commence 18 May and operate daily through 30 Sept

Departing Seattle at 0745 the ferry will arrivie Friday Harbor at 1115. The return voyage from Friday Harbor to Seattle will depart at 1630 & arrivie in Seattle at 1915h.
This is a very popular trip so request space well in advance if possible.

Departing Friday Harbor at 1630 and arriving in Bellingham at 1900 makes for a superb  mini day cruise.

Through a series of galleries tracing the life of the “unsinkable” ship, the exhibition features 281 artifacts recovered from Titanic’s undersea resting place  

Authentically recreated first and third-class corridors, cabins and the outdoor café are appointed with artifacts recovered from the shipwreck site 3,800 metres below the surface of the North Atlantic Ocean.
With boarding passes in hand museum visitors become immersed in the passenger experience as they climb the gangplank.

Mill Bay Ferry Service Temporarily Suspended

Beginning Tuesday April 10, 2007 service between Mill Bay and Brentwood Bay will be temporarily suspended
A scheduled major refit will keep the MV Mill Bay in drydock until early May when service will resume

With individual passenger fares of $5.00 & passenger vehicle fares of $20, BC Ferries is offering savings of up to 40% off regular fares for specific sailings between Tsawwassen and Swartz Bay

In anticipation of heavy Easter traffic, additional sailings are scheduled on the Horseshoe Bay – Departure Bay and Horseshoe Bay – Langdale routes
To accommodate traffic on
Good Friday and Easter Monday ,mid-day sailings will also be added on the Earls Cove – Saltery Bay route.

Drivers Travel free on Round Trips

Alaska Marine Highway System: Juneau, Alaska
The licensed driver of a passenger vehicle, including motorcycles will be allowed to travel FREE when accompanying a drivable vehicle on a “mirror image” round trip itinerary between any two Alaska Marine Highway ports.
A mirror image round trip itinerary is defined as travel from Port A to Port B and then Port B to Port A.

Please note however that after initial travel has begun, cancellation of either the driver or vehicle on the return segment of the round trip will invalidate the promotional Driver Free discount on both segments.

On April 01 the chatter because a reality, and bookings made after April 01 for any travel on the Alaska Marine ferries after June 30, will now cost an additional 3.2%.

With the new Wave2Go system foot passengers go to a kiosk, enter their destination to buy a boarding pass with their credit card, then swipe the pass thru the turnstiles.  
Gone are the days of waiting in line as someone struggles through their purse or wallet trying to find a credit card.
