US passport rule on hold, for Americans only
Senior homeland security officials in the US have announced they will temporarily suspend a rule requiring American air travellers to have a passport to re-enter the United States from Canada and Mexico.
The move is aimed at clearing a massive backlog in passport applications at the US state department.
Despite the temporary suspension, Canadian air travellers will still need passports to enter the US.
US & Canadian citizens crossing the border by land or sea do not require a passport until Jan 2008
