Good News For Alaska Ferries & Ferry Travellers

Alaska Marine Receives Stability Budget

The Alaska Legislature has approved a $66.7 million budget to keep the Alaska Marine Highway System running for the year.
The operating budget for the state's ferry service was increased by around $20 million over the previous year.

The ferry Aurora, (currently laid up because of cost-cutting), will receive another $19 million for repairs and and should now guarantee that a back-up ferry is available should another vessel breaks down.

Independent Rep. Dan Ortiz has determined to bring stability back to the state’s ferry network and to put "... the marine highway system in the place where they should be able to provide adequate service throughout the system."

While Governor Dunleavy still has an option to veto the budget, it is thought to be unlikely after this last years strain on not only the system, but Alaska residents & visitors to the state.

Seattle Victoria Ferry Reservations

Popularity of the Seattle Victoria Ferry Still Strong

In spite of COVID-19, travel on the Seattle Victoria ferry is still heavy.

With the reduction of sailings (no Tuesday or Wed sailings until May 14), it is now more important than ever to book well in advance if planning travel on the ferry either from Seattle to Victoria or Victoria to Seattle.

With the daffodils, crocus, tulips, hycinths etc all competing for spring praise, Victoria is particularly beautiful at this time of year.

Travel Insurance More Important Than Ever

Travel Insurance Protects Ferry Cancellation Charges

With the outbreak of COVID-19, securing travel insurance to protect against unexpected ferry cancellations /changes is now more important than ever.

Travel insurance can usually be obtained from auto associations ( AAA, BCAA, NFU, RAC) or independent insurance agencies.

BEFORE buying trip insurance however, double check with your credit card company as travel insurance is often an included perk with the more popular cards.
While it is important to carry travel insurance, it is both frustrating & unnecessarily costly, to pay for coverage you already have.

Enjoy A Day on the Water & an Afternoon in the Gardens

By taking the Seattle Victoria ferry you can sit back and enjoy the scenic Salish Sea before landing on the southern tip of Vancouver Island in Victoria, the capitol of British Columbia.

One of the most popular things to do when in Victoria is to visit Butchart Gardens.
Started by Jennie Butchart, the Gardens were once a cement plant but now comprise over 50 acres of the most spectacular plantings: trees, shrubs and flowers in the most remarkable setting will contribute to a full and happy day-long mini vacation.

While its impossible to see all of the Jeannie Butcharts' gardens on one trip, you can see enough to chat about on your sail back to Seattle, and to entice you to return to the Island.

Reservations are a must on the Seattle Victoria ferry and the best fares can be made online by going to www.ferrytravel.com or by emailing info@ferrytravel.com

Dynamic Pricing Is In Effect For Alaska Ferries

Book Alaska Ferry Travel Early to Avoid Increased Fare Costs

A quick reminder with respect to the Alaska ferry pricing.
All prices shown on www.ferrytravel.com are BASE PRICES.

Base price means that if the ferry requested has not yet reached a 30% sold space, the price shown on ferrytravel.com is accurate.

Once any ferry component on any ferry, reaches the 30% filled mark, the State of Alaska will start to add a surcharge to the base fare.

For example if vehicle space is almost sold out on any sailing, but there are still plenty of cabins and plenty of passenger space - only the vehicle fare will go up.
So in this instance, the per passenger cost and the per cabin cost will remain at the posted base cost price.

Alaska Ferry Schedules Summer 2020

Long Wait For Alaska Summer Ferry Schedules Finally Over

Summer schedules for the Alaska ferries will be available 02 March, 2020.

After months of wrangling, the State of Alaska has finally committed to the release date for their summer ferry schedules.
Ferry sailings for the summer period, May through September, will be available commencing the afternoon of 02 March.

For the fastest booking service call 1-800-686-0446, or go to www.ferrytravel.com.

REMEMBER: The State of Alaska introduced dynamic pricing last fall. Dynamic pricing means that as each sailing fills, the price rises.
This is particularly important for those booking the longer, more expensive trips like Bellingham - Haines; Bellingham - Whittier, Kodiak etc, where dynamic pricing can amount to hundreds of dollars.
